Known as the Walled City
Muscat is the capital and largest city in the Sultanate of Oman. It is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. It has been known since the second century AD. It is often referred to as the walled city.
Years ago, Muscat was walled in but the wall is now replaced by a stone moat, which the Omanis call al hosn or the fortification.
The old town's boundaries are marked by gated walls, enclosing the area the sultan's palace around the port, and the harbour.
Fishing is one of the traditional occupations in the city along with basket weaving, sewing fishing nets, tree felling, herding and folk medicine, in particular, bone setting.
The capital area has a number of shopping malls, mostly situated in Qurum area and in the Al Khuwair area. All the malls are fully air-conditioned, brightly lit and clean, have their own mix of shops and cafes.
Ruwi is the modern business centre where some of the hotels are usually situated.
North of Muscat the beaches are long wide and flat, your perfect swimmers paradise these are the most visited beaches in Oman, and where most of the hotels are situated.
Food is cheap in here and for about a Rial you will get a meal for two persons.
The Omanis are quite conservative people and respect for their privacy and, in particular, their religion and it should always be observed. Modesty is the keyword in how to dress. Women should wear loose, long garments, ensuring that their shoulders and knees are covered. Men should wear long trousers and tops with sleeves. Swimming costumes are fine for the beach or the pool.
Muttrah Souk is the oldest souk in the region. The ancient market boasts plenty of traditional charm. It covers over a large area and is crowded with stalls of spices, dates and antiques that jostle for the lime light with all manner of consumer junk. It is often described as the best market in the Gulf region and it also includes a fish market.
Al Alam Palace is Muscat's finest piece of real estate and is largely ceremonial, as His Majesty Sultan Qaboos said. He resides in a more private building else where. Built in 1972, the Al Alam Palace has a fairytale facade of towering gold and blue pillars wrapped in wrought iron and edged in green. Approach it on foot via the Kebir Gate in the old city walls for the best views.

antique wicker rocker w/ attached basket?
I have an antique wicker rocking chair with a basket weaved right into the side. It may have been used like a sewing basket? Does anyone know where I can find any information about this, and also about it's worth?
hi. Without a photo it is hard to provide much info...
You can try to contact http://www.thatwickerguy.com/ he buys, sells, and restores antique wicker furniture. He has some chairs with baskets and he calls the side basket a magazine basket and dates his similar chairs to 1920. As he is an expert I can not dispute it, however I would have thought it to be a sewing or knitting basket too, sewing and knitting were popular past times in that era - more so than magazines or newspapers....
There is another antique wicker furniture site at http://www.dovetailantiquewicker.com/ and at http://www.antique-wicker.com/wicker_gallery1.htm
you may find something similar or contact them for more info. There is also an auction house that deals with and appraises antique wicker furniture at http://www.hrtyrergalleries.com/auctions/March+23+02_4/Wicker+Furniture_31
If you are planning on selling it, note that an antique shop or online store will most likely value it for you but usually at the price they want to buy it for, not what they will sell it for (30% of value is a standard).
Consignment or Auctions are usually a better bet. Auction houses work for their commission and will offer it to the right buyers.
I answered another antique furniture question not too long ago, this may help you too....
Most furniture companies, especially those that produced many pieces used labels, is there a hint of where a label may have been? Any markings to help identify it?
A good start would be to gather some history and facts about the piece. How is it put together (all wood? are there nails in it? screws would mean a 20th C. piece.), if you know its origin or where it came from that will also help narrow down your search. The style of the piece or the type of decoration on it can help to identify a piece and age,
There are numerous resource books on Antique Furntiure, a few are free to read on the web - search google books.
If you know the origin of the piece you could try the Historical Society in that town or State, they would have lists of all companies doing business there or will help you find out more information.
For finding value, I would either send a photo to one of the major auction houses Doyles, Sothebys, Christies, Skinners, or one near you which has specialty auctions for furniture- All of the major auction houses accept photos, most via email, in hopes of consigning your items. They will somtimes tell you the maker and value, even if it doesn't make their consignment minimums.
Good Luck! Hope I've helped a bit!
