sewing machine stuck on one stitch style?
I have a used kenmore sewing machine. It was given to me by someone and I don't have the owners manual. The machine seems to be stuck on one style of stitch and even when I change the stitches it still makes the same one. It is model number 158.12511 and the serial number is 0003216. I have a quote from Joann fabric to take the machine service it and diagnose the problem. They want $70 and to keep the machine for 3 weeks. I don't want to spend that much for them to look at my machine and tell me that its not fixable. Please give me some feedback on what could possibly be the problem. If I am going to spend a large amount of money on a sewing machine I would rather buy a new one. I have seen some singers that I liked that were under $100 and I wont spend more than $50 to repair this one. Thanks in advance!!
If this is a lever, some you depress before moving and some you twist the knob before moving, then twist to tighten in place.
Since this is a Sears product and they do have appliance repair - ask them for an estimate.
$70 for cleaning and a once over is average. There are extra charges if something needs replaced.
Always stipulate that you be contacted should a part need to be replaced to avoid yet a larger expense.
Bottom line, sewing machines should be serviced once a year unless you want an inexpensive machine that you toss and replace after a year or so of use.
A replacement manual for your Kenmore would probably cost around $12.00, but it would only be for operation, some maintenance and nothing about repair.
