I would like to find a pattern for a yamaka and a prayer shawl for a man or a woman.?
I love to sew and I have been sewing since I was 13 year's old and I enjoy it. I am now 53. I found out I am Jewish through my father about eight years ago and I would like to learn a Jewish craft. I think doing a craft like sewing a yamaka would be fun and I can give it to my son who also celebrates his hertiage. I would like to learn all the details of sewing a yamaka and a prayer shawl. Who know's, I may be good at it.

Most of the yarmulke patterns I know of are crocheted or knitted, so they probably wouldn't lend themselves to sewing although you could certainly do that if you want to. The only pattern I know of is at the first link, below.
The prayer shawl or tallit is a little more complicated; the shawl itself is just a rectangular piece of cloth; it is the fringes or "tzitzit" that make it into a tallit. The second link below gives directions on how to tie the tzitzit. The other distinctive part of the tallit is the atarah, or neckband. It's usually quite decorative, and are often very finely embroidered. You can make your own, or order them from many places online.
Julie, above, neglects to mention that Reform Jews do recognize the children of Jewish FATHERS as Jews. She is, however, correct in saying that traditionally, it is through the mother's line that "Jewishness" is determined, unless you convert to Judaism.
