How does Maxi-Lock thread compare to regular sewing machine thread?
Can serger thread be used in regular sewing machines? I usually use Dual Duty or Gutermann thread for sewing. I do not have a serger, but have some Maxi-Lock serger thread and wondered if I should open it to use for my sewing machine.
The Maxi-Lock thread will work in your regular sewing machine, but the results will not be as fine as when you use Gutermann thread due to the relative coarseness of the serger thread. Try this test: take 6-8" of the Maxi-Lock thread and lay it on a piece of contrasting paper; lay an equal amount of Gutermann thread along side of it, now look at both threads with a magnifying lens and you will see the difference. The serger thread should look sort of fuzzy while the Gutermann will look much smoother. As for Dual-Duty thread: YUK! This thread is made of polyester and cotton and should only be used for projects you don't really care about. I have discovered that it lints up the interior of your machine much more than other brands, doesn't last as long as others, and has generally sat around in warehouses for years, losing strength and flexibility. As a general rule for threads, if it is over 3 years old, toss it.
