What accessories do I need for my new sewing machine?
I just received a new machine for christmas. I have never used one before and will be taking a basic instructions class. I am going to set up a space for my machine. Any tips on sewing and sewing accessories like tape measures or any tips at all are welcome for a beginner :) thank you
Good scissors! Get a pair that will be used for absolutely nothing other than fabric.
Sewing machine oil. You'll need to use it every 3-6 months, but only a tiny bit each time. Your machine's owner's manual has instructions for oiling the machine.
A small cleaning brush. Basically, you'll just be 'dusting' inside the machine every month or so. Most fabric stores sell small sewing machine cleaning brushes. Ask a clerk to show you. Most folks see them but don't know what they are meant to be used for.
A tape measure.
Straight pins. I prefer the ones with colored heads, as they are TONS easier to find if I spill them!
A large magnet for picking up spilled straight pins.
A pincushion.
A few safety pins.
Pad and pencil for making notes.
Extra bobbins for your machine. Check the owner's manual to be sure you buy the right size. The two most common sizes are class 15 and class 66. Check and see which kind your machine takes before heading to the fabric store.
Thread in black, white, navy, tan, and any other color you might be using for common mending and such.
Oh, yeah: once you learn to use the machine, make yourself a simple drawstring bag to keep most of this stuff in! If you ever need "just a little" fabric, buy what's called a "fat quarter" or a "quarter flat." It's a piece of fabric for quilters that is 18" x 22" and costs anywhere from $1.- to $3.- or so, depending on store, fabric, sales, etc.
