i'm getting a sewing machine, what kind of table would work best?
preferably inexpensive :)
The links to the videos given by the answerer before me on ergonomics and also on creating your own sewing table were good, but here are a few other things to consider:
...a lot of the factors she mentions in the videos, as well as things you'll definitely want to consider, need to be right for YOUR height which will make a lot of difference (she says she's 5'6" but could also have a long or short trunk, etc, and therefore be different from you)
...using an office chair that's *adjustable* heightwise can make up some for a too-tall table, etc ...I always have to use my chair as high as it will go (I can still reach the pedal with the ball of my foot, but if that bothered me I'd probably put the pedal on a small riser, and I always use a bit of non-slip shelf liner under the pedal anyway to keep it from moving around too much)
...one cool tip for general sewing or for piecing quilts is to use two rubber door stops (the wedge-shaped ones) underneath the back side of your machine--that will tilt the bed of the machine (and the whole machine) slightly toward your face ... that's a better angle for the neck than trying to look straight down on the sewing area (works for me as a short person too)
...unless you want to go to the trouble of doing what she did (though you could perhaps just use some of the same ideas in a smaller version), you'll probably end up just using some kind of small sturdy table that's wide enough for the machine plus more if you have the space, and that allows you to sit directly in front of where the needle will be without difficulty
. . . you can make many of them shorter (wood or plastic legs) by cutting off same-lengths of all 4 legs (then put rubbery feet or sliders underneath to even them out if necesary, and to keep from scratching floors), or you can make the tables taller by doing various things (putting each leg into a can filled with plaster, cement, or rocks or something, or small open wood "box" that's thick on the bottom, etc.)
...the main thing is to get a table that's sturdy enough not to jiggle when you're sewing, and to get one that ends up at the right height for you
...you also won't want a table with a tall "skirt" under the top surface because that will keep you from being able to have your thighs close enough to your arms while sewing, which is a good position (by close enough, I mean the absolute distance from thighs to forearms as if the table weren't in between them)
...personally, I do like the old "sewing tables" because they do place the sewing machine down into the table enough that the bed of the machine is even with the table, which is great for sewing some things (so I would have just cut off the legs of the first table she showed probably, then used an adjustable office chair to make any corrections)
...when I got my latest sewing table, I needed a small one so ended up looking at all kinds of small tables, computer tables, etc., till I found one that was reasonable
(I might end up using some of her ideas though too, but I'll have to have the removable piece of Styrofoam she shows in the 2nd or 3rd video because my bobbin loads from the side, not from the top)
