It is worth taking up sewing as a hobby?
I'm thinking of purchasing a sewing machine to make my small dogs sweaters, maybe make quilts, and when I get good make myself some clothing. I have never used a sewing machine. I have crocheted but get very impatient and don't get excited about the results. Is it worth it to take up sewing?
I have been sewing for over 40 years. I remember when I started to learn that my mother said" if you learn to sew , you will never be bored". She was "sew" right. ( pun intended). I learned to sew garments, and now I am a quilter. There is never enough time to do all that I want.
It is interesting to look over my history of sewing and see the skills and the artistry develop.
A few pointers mentioned earlier,
- Do take lessons , it will pay off , take some of the learning frustrations out of the process
- Do find a good independent quilt shop that offers lessons. The staff is probably more than eager to help you learn , thru formal classes as well as informal info.
- Do have patience , as with anything , it is a skill that comes with practice
- Pick easy projects at first. Nothing spoils a desire than failure from trying too hard of projects with out the skills and experience.
- Find a sewing buddy , who can coach you through some of the basics.
- Quilting becomes an addiction !!
If there is one thing I am grateful for is my sewing hobby! Thanks MOM for teaching me!
