how would i go about sewing one piece, button down, pajamas?
i'm trying to make a "where the wild things are" costume for my friend. i bought a pattern that's close but it involves a zipper and i need a pattern for buttons. can anyone help?
Find the center mark on the pattern... it'll probably be 5/8" in from the cut edge.
Draw in the center line.
Find your buttons; measure the diameter.
Now you're going to have to design the button extension for the button side of the pattern. Draw a straight line the width of the button + 1/8" parallel to the center front line -- this is additional width added to the pattern.
Fold the pattern back on itself on the new line you've drawn -- let's call that line Fold 1. This lets you draw the facing -- we're going to do an extended facing.
On that piece of paper you've folded back, trace in the shape of the neckline and hem, and draw a shape 2.5" wide from the shoulder to the hemline. Cut out the pattern.
To sew: Fuse interfacing to the back of the facing piece from the cut edge to Fold 1. Hem or overcast the cut edge. Fold in half on Fold 1.
Construct the costume.
Sew the buttons on the centerfront line, equally spaced. Sew the buttonholes on the other side, through the outside and facing. perpendicular to Fold 1, with the buttonhole ending on Fold 1.

Frankly, it's probably faster and easier just to put in that zipper. Invisible zippers are very easy to sew -- you just have to remember to press the coils out before sewing. The instructions in the package are very good. http://www.sewing.org/files/guidelines/12_310_invisible_zipper.pdf
