Should NZ SP14 Franchises be sold, and what conditions do you place on them?
No. 1 for me has to be all players are available for the International season.
2. NZRU has sewn up player contracts.
3. NZ Rugby does not become a feeder for the big money clubs in Europe.
Make sure that NZ Franchises dont become immersed in debt if the owners decide to pull money out of the club.
This is just like a food chain. League clubs in Australia complain about Super-14 Union clubs poaching their players, and the Super-14 complain about NH clubs doing the same. And of course any 14 year-old Islander who shows talent will find himself pursued by any number of Kiwi clubs, while the Samoa/Tonga/Fiji unions have to make do with what is left behind.
Just how do you propose to prevent players from pursuing lucrative contracts, wherever they might be. Force the players to sign life-time contracts, and then expect the courts to enforce them? It simple isn't possible. New Zealand clubs -- individually or collectively -- are simply going to have to come up with the cash to make competitive offers.
Players are always going to follow the best offers. Association football has learned to live with player mobility and I'm afraid that Rugby Union is going to have to do the same.
