There's no such thing as the "British accent"! So why define all accents within Britain as THE BRITISH ACCENT?
Great Britain, Britannia, The United Kingdom, Albion, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales... The list goes on and on into which Britain is known as to people around the globe.
It strikes me as odd, due to the fact that we have four countries that sew Britain up; England, Northern Ireland ("Ulster"), Wales and Scotland, that it's often described as, amongst none-British folk, the British accent.
Considering Britain is the most diverse country in the world in accent terms, and has over 1000 different accents from the point of the very top of it, to the very base of the bottom of it- So really, there is NO particular "British Accent" as people describe it to be...
I agree - it is v annoying, we have such lingustic diversity, yet many people would rather us be standardised. i have been guilty of this on occasions when i have been 'up north' and really struggle to comprehend e.g cumbrian accents! It is one of the fabulous aspects that makes us an interesting and diverse country.
BTW you are right and the other person is wrong - you said northern ireland is Ulster (correct), Eire refers to the republic of ireland. Don't you just hate it when people correct you ... but are in fact wrong themselves. It only takes a minute to check something!
