How do I hem a dress without a sewing machine?
I recently bought a nice black dress which is versatile for both work and formal occasions. The problem is that the length is a bit too long for me (i'm too short) and needs to be taken up by a couple of inches. It also has a slit on the back as well. How do i hem the skirt without a sewing machine?
One stitch at a time, the same as any fine needlework.
Basically, you will need to open the old hem and the part of the back slit and refinish the back-slit finished higher before continuing the re-hemming.
Hemming tape is sometime convenient for straight hems, but less so for curved hems.
If the dress is fully-lined, a new hem is stitched to the lining only, with no stitching showing through to the front.
If the hem is curved, you may choose to "face" the new hemline with the fabric removed in the shortening procedure. This is a *lot* of stitching, but the result can be totally excellent, while just turning up a curved hem can leave a multitude of lumps when done by an inexperienced sew-er.
It may take longer to tidily hand-hem something, but it takes a *lot* of skill to machine-hem without the result looking like feces.
