Is there a way to substitute machine top stitching with hand sewn stitches like the back stitch?
I'm sewing a lolit-ish maid outfit and a cosplay outfit and the pattern says that I have to use mostly top stitches, edge stitches and stay stitches. Unfortunately,I hear that these stitches can only be preformed on sewing machine only and I don't have one beacuse I usually handsew. Is there a way to substitute these machine stitches with hand stitches that will hold just as well? Or can someone tell me where I can find a tutorial on how to do these types of stitches by hand? I'm really lost...
Wow, it'll take you a year to do all of that and get the stitches close together, tight and strong enough to make tidy seams, but here are some things to remember.
Stay stitching will be the easiest because it's just a row of very small stitches close to the edge, to keep the piece from stretching or distorting when you go to sew it to the next piece.
Topstitching is a row of straight stitching that shows on the outside. Fabric to be topstitched should be stabilized with interfacing or spray starch..
Edgestitching is topstitching that's sewn closer than 1/8" to a finished edge.
Here's a picture of an antique garment with edgestitching and topstitching. http://www.cjdaley.com/146th17.jpg
