Why are sewing needles different sizes?
I'm not referring to the ones in the sewing machine, I understand the weight of different materials need a heavier needle. What I'm talking about is the opening to thread the needle, why is it so small? I spent too long trying to thread one this morning. If they would make the opening bigger, it would be easier.
I'm talking about the hole the thread goes through, not the needle itself. I know about different fabrics.
As they increase the opening size, they weaken the needle. Needles are designed to be used in certain weights of materials that will require a certain diameter thread. If they make the opening bigger it may encourage people to use the wrong needle or thread for the fabric and if the head of the needle is made larger to allow a bigger eye, it may disrupt or damage the material being sewn.
