Question about Patterns!?

I have a question about patterns. I am not new to sewing per say but do it mostly as a hobby then anything. My question is about patterns and sizes. I realize that I need to guide myself based on measurements but-why does my dress size in patterns seem to be more than the dress size I buy from a store? Reason I am asking is that I made a skirt over the weekend and NO I did not measure myself first (bad girl!) and when it was done it was too small in the hips! Yet I cut out the pattern of the size I generally buy when I am shopping for clothing. Any guesses as to why or is this normal? FYI: the skirt is a typical A style, slightly loose fitted, made with a knit material. Fits perfect in the waist, just not in the hips and I did use the seam guage. Maybe it is suppose to be somewhat tight across the hips as I know this is a 'style' of today but I don't like it!! Help!!

Stores dont like to admit it, but they use a method called "vanity sizing" where they size everything up a size to make you feel better about yourself and then you buy the garment. in a store, i'm a size 8(uk) but i KNOW for a fact that I'm a size 10(uk) so when I make something for myself i'll make it a 10.
it's only a number afterall
