Home made Sanitary napkins for your menses!!!!?
I just ran up on a website where women had actually sewn and used their own sanitary napkins even stating to have bucket of water in the bathroom to dump the pads in. One woman said to add extra water to it and then pour it on your plants. Am I wrong for thinking that this is such an unsanitary idea???? Does those pads stop you from leaking all over yourself? Please someone enlighten me
HELLO!
People we are not living in the world war II era we are in the 21st century. Disposables were made for a reason and blood is nasty as hell it can give you life or take it away.
You're not wrong, just unaware of the issues involved when it comes to menstrual health and menstrual products.
Cloth pads are just as sanitary as disposables, they are actually far more hygienic as they allow the genitals to 'breathe' keeping you cool and dry, where as disposable pads don't allow the area to 'breathe' so tend to make the area warm and moist, thus causing smell and meaning more bacteria and yeast can multiply triggering off infections such as thrush and UTI's. Commercial pads also contain chemicals and bleach which can not only increase risk of infection and cause irritation, but also as companies don't tell consumers what ingredients are used we can't be sure of long-term health risks.
Cloth pads are also MUCH more comfortable than using disposable pads as they're soft material, you don't feel as sweaty in them and they don't rub on your legs or stick to your skin. You can make your own, you can also buy from companies like Lunapads, Reddy's, Gladrags or any number of other companies as cloth pads are very popular, you can also get all sorts of different styles, you can also get period belts which are long pads held in place around your waste like what our great grans may have used, or period panties which are underwear with pads built-in. They work as well as any other pads, if they didn't women wouldn't use them and bear in mind that women were using cloth pads long before disposable were around, you sometimes have to change more often, or with cloth pads you can add extra liners to the pad itself, or if making them yourself you can use different materials.
Not everyone who uses cloth pads soak them like that, most women I know will just put them into their washing machine along with the rest of their clothes, but even with soaking it's perfectly fine as menstrual blood isn't toxic, it's clean and pads are then washed so they will be clean when re-used. I know a lot of women who water their plants with menstrual blood in the water or use menstrual blood as a compost activator as it is nutritious and has the right sort of levels of bacteria to be beneficial to certain plants. It's just it's so drummed into us that menstruation is gross and that we must use disposable products to deal with it, more women these days are realising how harmful such products are to health and the environment.

Edit: Yes, we're living in the 21st century, where women are now more capable than ever of learning how best to care for their bodies, and where it is more important than ever to care for the environment - with disposables a woman will add 12,000 pads to landfills in her lifetime, manufacturing adds to waste, pollution and deforestation. Blood is no more nasty than any other part of your body, if you feel that way about your own body then that's your choice, but we aren't all quite so brainwashed, we aren't all so willing to use unhygienic, unsafe, environmentally harmful, expensive products from unethical companies. Why use smelly uncomfortable pads when there are cloth pads? What was the point in asking this question if unwilling to listen to the answers or enlighten yourself?
