How to hand make a quilt from start to finish?

this will be a first for me, I realllly want to make one I have already bought the fabrics of my choice and i know i have to wash them first before I cut them but thats all I really know. I dont have a sewing machine and I know that people have made and still do it by hand and since all I have is my hands, needles and thread I need to know how to do it. What size needle is best; what type of thread is best etc etc...I know nothing and I'm going for gold lol its going to be about full size maybe queen..I've heard that you should start out making small ones but thats just not me. I know its going to be hard and take a lot of time but I have pleanty of that as I am a stay at home mom and I just decided I wanted to make a quilt..TODAY...so now I need help from all of you out there :)

LOL! You are about to undertake a heck of a task! It's addicting though. My first dozen quilts were done by hand, and I also did a big quilt first. Took a long time, but I got it. A lot of the things you will need to know as far as cutting and piecing depend on your pattern, but measure twice cut once is a mantra you should learn. When sewing pieces together, you should use a regular sized needle, a 'between', I think it's called. Use whatever you're comfortable with and can make good even stitches with. Work to use the smallest stitches you can produce, shoot for no less than 6 per inch, in order to ensure that the quilt wil hold together when you're done. I either use an all cotton, or a cotton covered poly thread. Don't skimp, dollar store thread gives dollar store results. Remember, this is gonna hold the whole thing together. Make sure to keep your seam allowances even, a quarter inch is the standard, but they should all be the same, I had to actually measure for a while til I could eyeball it. When you get the top done, and layer it for quilting, switch to a smaller needle. Quilting needles are usually very small, and are sold as quilting needles. Use a lot of pins when you baste the layers together, even if it doesn't seem like you need that many, it will help a lot. I could go on for days, but you get the idea. There are lots of videos on Youtube which explain different parts of quiltmaking, and your library has a ton of info, I'm sure. Just remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and this quilt won't be either. Don't give up. It may take a while (my first one took 6 months), but when you're done, you will have a family heirloom to pass on to your kids. Good luck & have fun!
