What is topstitching and how do I do it?

I have a pattern for a project that I want to complete that calls for topstitching. What is this and how would I do it on a sewing machine?

Topstitching is a length of stitching done on the top of a seam to give it a finished appearance. You can use the same thread you used to construct the garment, a heavier thread (also known as topstiching thread), or any type of thread that will fit in your sewing machine.

You can use the edge of your presser foot to guide the stitching line (the smaller section of the foot).

Here's the steps:
1. After the seam has been sewn and pressed to one side, put the garment under the presser foot with the smaller edge of the foot lined up with te edge of the pressed seam on your garment.
2. Using a slightly longer stitch than what you used to construct the garment, stitch a line right next to the edge of the seam.
3. You can add a second line of stitching next to the first and use the wider section of your presser foot as a guide to keep the line of stitching straight and even.

Using a heavier thread than what you used to construct the garment will make it "pop" out. In the bobbin, use the same thread you used to construct the garment.

Using a longer stitch length in the topstitching makes it look more professional and makes the stitching stand out more.

Topstitching is used as a decorative stitch on the outside of the garment and also stregthens the seam. If you look at a pair of jeans,embellishmente seams have this emblishment on the outside (like the outside seam of the leg).

When you topstitch the second line, do it in the opposite direction of the first line of stitching. This helps eliminate the wavy look sometimes seen on lower-end garments.
