Help Getting Started and Troubleshooting a Toyota 421 Sewing Machine Please?
Hi,
I have just got a second hand Toyota 421 sewing machine and I'm having trouble getting started. This is the first time I've used a sewing machine on my own so there's every chance its me doing something wrong (so please don't skip the obvious).
I have loaded my bobbin and placed it in the shuttle but the needle isn't picking it up and the shuttle falls out. What have I done?
Also, can anyone recommend a good trouble shooting source? or a place where I can get a manual?
Thanks
I'm not familiar with this particular machine, but I know sewing machines in general pretty well. I've used tons of different models. Most have lots in common. If your shuttle falls out, try this: when you put the bobbin and shuttle into the machine, hold the little flap on the shuttle open with your finger and thumb. Use it as a handle. Make sure the little hook at the top of the shuttle lines up with the little indentation in the machine. Usually, these line up at the top of the circle, but not always. Look for the dent the hook should fit into. Seat it properly and push gently until your hear the right 'click.'
Be sure your bobbin is correctly loaded into the shuttle. The thread comes through the little overlapping side gap in the shuttle. Be sure it pulls easily.
When you have the bobbin and shuttle correctly placed in the machine, don't shut the bobbin-box door until the thread has picked up. With one hand, hold onto the end of the thread theat comes through the needle. With the other hand, roll the handwheel all the way around so the needle goes all the way down and all the way back up. Do this without changing the direction of your rolling. (You don't roll forward to get the needle down and backward to get it back up, or vice versa. You keep rolling the same directin=on until the needle goes down and comes back up.)
To find an owner's manual, go to a search engine like Google or Dogpile and type in "owner's manual sewing machine Toyota 421" and hit enter. One can usually find any owners's manual for anything that way. It may not be free, but you'll be glad you have it. They may even have an online version. it all depends on the company.
