So You Want To Become A Lead Singer,here's How,a True But Tragic Story
I am a drummer and my brother is a bass player,we had been playing in various line ups around Perth,Western Australia,for quite a while. But we needed,the time had come to go to the next level. We needed a good lead singer.
A good front man,lead singer,is not an old fashioned(Singer) brand of English sewing machine.
He is a draw card,a magnet,and a focal point for your band.Also it is a must he/she must have a good singing voice.The greater the quality the better,as all musicians know Joe public really only judge a band on the lead singer.
Our guitarist through contacts knew of a young eighteen year old,who was available,with an awesome voice,but he was very green when it came too stagecraft.
We got together with the kid as I,and we used to refer to him from now on. This kid put simply had a voice to die for.The problem was his inexperience on stage,we were going to be his one and only band.
The kid ended up in America,recorded an album at twenty,with some very famous musicians.
Like Russ kunkel on drums,and Jeff(skunk) Baxter from the doobie brothers on guitar.
Unfortunately when his mentor left America,drugs entered the scene,and the pressure to write the second album,saw him coming home and dying of a drug overdose,accidental cocktail overdose.
While wit out band,which had three teachers in it we were able to teach him how to be a good front man.
Firstly his speech onstage had to be worked on,the answer is less is more. So we structured our song list so he didn't have to speak much at all by linking songs together.
Look at the great front men,Jagger,Springsteen,they all have something that "attracts" so we worked on the kids looks which he had,and in fact became his thing,as he looked so young,the girls loved it.
After each song he never said much,he didn't have too,as we linked songs,and went straight into each one. But where we did not do this he was told to say for example "one of grants,down too the bottom of the sea" and no more.
During lead breaks etc, I told him to come to the rum riser and look at me and "strike a pose" so he deliberately turned his back on the audience (A no ,no) and formed a crucifix.
This was provoking, and confronted the audience,who loved it.
Some gigs we supported famous Aussie bands,I.N.X.S, and Cold Chisel, the sound was always bad. For these gigs we learnt to not/ever have the kid announce "OK this is our last song,the divinyls are up next" this only encouraged the audience to boo the support band off stage.
No we never got booed off once,and left to applause, and one quick "goodnight" from the kid.
Well there are some guidelines, I will not release his name out of respect.
R.I.P. young fella you are truly one of a kind.

you can buy online at amazon.com who will deliver to aus in about 5 days. you will also need to buy a transformer from your local electrical store as they come with us power voltage not aus. a transformer will cost you $100 aus approx. still cheap given the machine is heavily reduced on amazon...good luck
