shirring elastic sewing
how do i create shirring?
I'm following directions that i got of the internet, by a good source.. it tells me to "Sew a running stitch within the 7 inches you just measured, 1/4 inch from the cut edge, and PULL THREAD TO CREATE SHIRRING." I know you can do shirring with an elastic, but i just can't do it with out one! I want to know how to do it by hand or machine, which ever is faster!

I usually run two lines of very long stitches with the machine 1/8" apart. Then take the two thread ends from one end of stitching on the face of the piece and anchor them. Take the two thread ends from the other end of the stitching on the face of the piece and pull them gently until the fabric gathers up on the threads. The thread ends on the underside can be left hanging at this point.
Once the gathering (shirring) has been adjusted to the correct length, smooth out the fabric, making the gathers even, and stitch through with a regular length machine stitch to stabilize the gathers.
