old mccalls sewing patterns
Learning to sew?
I am trying to learn how to sew. I have a two year old daughter and thought it would be perfect to make her little outfits as I learn how to sew. I bought Mccalls pattern #M5028. I kinda need to know the basics of how to measure my daughter or just in general how to get started and how to make this outfit not look like I just started sewing. Oh and do I fold the edges of the material down 1/4" or is it different when you are making an outfit like this?
Measuring needs to be done accurately and even this takes a bit of practice.
For a basic garment such as a dress you'll to measure her chest/rib cage, waist, hips, neck to waist length and shoulder to hem length...where ever the hem will end.
For pants you'll need the waist, hips, inseam, and the rise...this is taken from the center front starting at the waist line and under her crotch to her butt, ending at the center of her back at her waist line.
For shirts and jackets you'll need neck to waist length, chest, waist and hip measurements, and in some patterns shoulder to shoulder measurements.
Sewing is quite easy once you get the hang of it. It's best to start with patterns that are basic. I like these because as you progress you can switch them up, add layers, pleats, darts, etc and really personalize the garment.
As for the 1/4" you're talking about...I'm not sure what you mean. Seam allowances on most patterns are generally about 5/8" but if you want her to be able to wear the garment for a while 1/4" is good. A seam allowance is how much material there is after the stitching line or seam. These are in such places as a shoulder seam, side seam, arm seam...anywhere else there is a seam where the fabric is connecting to another piece of fabric. If you don't want the seam allowances to fray you can stitch them down, and this would be however big your seam allowance is, you can do a zigzag stitch on it, or you can roll the seam so the raw edges aren't showing and then do a straight stitch over this, but don't stitch it to the outside material. This prevents any fraying from wear and washing.
There are so many books out that can teach you the basics of sewing and all you need to know. You don't necessarily have to go to any classes. My mom never did and she's a wonderful seamstress. I learned from her but did take a secondary course...it didn't teach me anything more that I didn't already know or learn from my mom. So I'd save your money for now and just take out a bunch of books from the library.
