What do you like to remember about Christmas from your childhood?
My Mother had a few Christmas albums that were played on the record player while we decorated the house and the tree. Her favorite was one by Gene Autry. The albums were 78s played one record at a time. Some of you know what I'm talking about here. We didn't have much money but Mother loved Christmas. She always made Christmas candy and baked for days on end. Many of our gifts were home made and sometimes they were reconditioned toys, bikes, etc. that had been given to older siblings on Christmases past. Sometimes recognizable but that didn't matter because Mother made them special for the new owner. New home made clothes for a favorite doll, new pajamas that were sewed on an old Singer treadle machine after we had all gone to bed. So on Christmas, not the gifts or candy or toys are my best memories, but my Mother who loved the season so. God Bless you, Mother. May you enjoy your first Christmas in heaven.
So many things, but the Christmas music was a big part of it. I remember baking cookies with mom and we would have on Christmas albums of Brenda Lee, Wayne Newton, Elvis, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole. I remember my mom's favorite Christmas decorations, of a real white flocked 3 ft Christmas tree decorated with blue lights and ornaments. I can see her now standing at the range making fudge. We baked home made choc chip cookies to send to my brother who was in basic training one Christmas. I remember a year that mom and dad could not afford a Barbie for me but I got a 'Midge' doll. I was happy with it, and the next year I got my Barbie. Our house had a lot of my brother's friends around, and their girlfriends there as well. We would put on albums on the console stereo and dance in the living room. I also remember several years that my dad played Santa to the family and neighborhood kids. One particular Christmas Eve the streets and trees were snow covered. He left the house walking down the silent street, no traffic and the street light gleaming on the wintry scene as we watched out the front door. The snow was coming down like it does in a snow globe as he walked down the street and the jingle bells on his belt chimed. I'll never forget that scene. Nice times to remember. I'm taking advice and trying to remember the happy Christmas times. Your question helped to do that. :) I do remember some of the 78 albums.
