Seing Classes Nearby?
I've been wanting to take sewing lessons for about a month now. I can't seem to find any places that catch my eye in the Riverside, CA area. Any suggestions? (BTW I am a Beginner, and by this I mean that I have touched a sewing machine once, and sticthed a sort-of straight line on an old piece of fabric).
This may sound crazy, but before you even get in a class what's your knowledge of hand sewing? Believe it or not, having an elementary idea of what fundamental stitches look like actually will help you when you take a class.
After all, before you learned how to use a calculator, didn't you start out with paper and pencil? Why then jump into a class without any technical knowledge of what sewing entails? The machine has only been around for 150 years, prior to that, all sewing was done by hand. If you were asked to do a slip stitch, or put in a hem, would you know how to do it?
A lot can be done in hand sewing that will improve your mechanical stitches. Regard the lovely parkas made by Inuits! Too many times, people think that taking a mechanical sewing class is how you start,when in fact, hand sewing is really where you should begin.

Truly, at some point, your manual skills will come into play in sewing. It's best to start out with a good foundation. After finishing the steps in this kit, you'll actually have a great understanding of quilting, and will not be so puzzled if and when you get into clothing or decorator construction. In these areas, your hand skills can be required.
