Sewing the binding of a quilt?

Do I have to have a long enough piece of thread to stitch a whole side before I can stop? Or can I stop like, half way through? Because I have a large quilt and I can't make it from one corner to the other without stopping, its too long. So how do I end a thread before I get to a corner? Thanks

A piece of thread? I don't quite understand. Are you hand stitching the whole of the binding on by hand, or have you machined on one side and are slipstitching the second side having folded the binding over the rough edge? If that's so - and anyway - only ever use a piece of sewing thread about 15-18 inches long. Any longer and it will get tangled up anyway. When you get to the end of any piece of sewing like this, do a little double stitch and run the thread through and round to tie or knot it slightly. When I start I run the knotted thread through the quilt layers until the knot catches, and then start sewing.
