Sewing — Quilting Are People Still Stitching? Original Sewing & Quilt Expo Has the Answer

Westlake, OH (PRWEB) January 14, 2011

Sewing of all types is truly alive and well. For three days Schaumburgs Convention Center is transformed into the most personally rewarding, one-stop learning and shopping experience available in the region this year. Regular visitors to Original Sewing & Quilt Expo will meet returning favorites even while discovering new people, products and ideas at every turn. Attendees can meet special guest Ellen March, Editor in Chief of Sew News, Creative Machine Embroidery and host of the brand new PBS television series Sew It All, as she shares behind the scenes stories (including bloopers and outtakes) and projects from the show on Friday and Saturday at the Expo. If youre in the mood to learn something new, the For Rookies workshop series shares the essential basics of quiltmaking, surface design, sewing for kids and more, while advanced technique classes keep experienced enthusiasts moving ahead creatively and technically. Four busy workshop studios, sponsored by Baby Lock, Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff and Brother are filled with fashion, quiltmaking, home dcor, embroidery, embellishment and gift-making sessions. Longarm quilters will have their own Gammill-sponsored Studio, filled with hands-on workshops on all three days. There are even classes and resources for those with home-based sewing, quilting and embroidery businesses at the Expo.

In the Exhibit Hall, attendees can try the latest products and learn to use them as they restock, add to collections and fabric stashes, and discover unique treasures for projects to come. In-booth demonstrations, make-it and take-it projects and helpful advice from experienced, creative staff round out the experience in retail booths which have converged in Schaumburg from around the region and all corners of the country, bringing all the newest fabrics, tools, software, machines, threads, fibers, patterns, designs, embellishments, notions and more with them.

All in all, theres something at the Expo for everyone. The Display Galleries offer specially curated quilt collections, award-winning competition quilts, incredible fantasy garments and more; designers, manufacturers and retailers share their latest products, ideas and techniques in the Exhibit Hall; inspiring runway fashion shows, trunk shows and how-to demos take place on two Exhibit Hall Stages all day long, and 35 faculty members gathered from around the country offer more than 130 workshops and seminars in classrooms throughout the Expo. One day is nice, two is better, but many find it takes three full days to enjoy all thats available at Original Sewing & Quilt Expo.

So the trends are clear: early class registrations at Original Sewing & Quilt Expo events in Chicago and four other cities this Spring show enthusiasts are seeking expertise in several key areas, including pattern design and construction, machine quilting and a bevy of new, non-machine embellishment techniques like silk screening, beading and dye discharge. The return to classic fitting classes, along with the sales figures at the Fall events for fabrics and patterns from new, independent designers confirms the story: sales are on the rise as interest surges. Fashion sewing -- and all the related needle arts -- are not only alive and well, theyre thriving.
