The Secret of Pattern Drafting

Wondering how did someone get the exact cuts and curves of the same dress you saw at a store and they got it recreated? Or you might be eager to know about sewing patterns- then pattern drafting is the right fine art for you to learn.

Well, who knows you might be inspired right now when you get to see your designs beautifully brought out by the magic of pattern drafting, and all you need to do is, get your calculator out, take your measurement, get large sheets to work on, and a ruler!

This is the application of Lutterloh pattern making system with the Tailor's Curve, the Designer's Curve, all that you need to learn. Here are some easy ways to gather info.

Know-how

To get the designer's look on your clothes you need to have a know-how of pattern drafting system that teaches you bodice cuts, waistline cuts, the Tailor's Curve, the Designer's curve, shoulder darts, through 3hour DVDs and can also read books on sewing, and take up this work as your hobby, you career, for fun or polishing your creativity.

The pattern designing can be done with a set of ruler, large sheets, and a calculator, manually that is and can also be presented digitally, as the latter is quicker. It is advisable to download software that support pattern drafting calculations. You don't need to risk an entire work that is time and effort consuming just to have miscalculations.

The process and its requisites

Carving out the correct pattern for your dress, needs the knowledge of Tailor's curve and Designer's curve that you need to use to fulfill the right measurement for drafting the specified pattern.

You need to create curves which 23"L (approx) for shirts, sleeves, trousers, dresses and shorts for which you need a Designer's curve, and for a curve measuring 18"L (approx) you need to use a Tailor's curve making collars, armholes, necklines, skirts and trousers.

You would also need a tracing wheel, a long ruler using it as a yardstick, to make 90 and 45 degree angles use a set square, and read a good sewing referral journal, magazine or book.

The sewing work

This is a system where you are implementing your own creativity by a systematic sewing method so you need to be hard working and should be able to concentrate.

You should stick to a time frame and improvise ideas slowly, and don't rush. It is likely that you will make mistakes, so instead of getting fed up learn from them, and let go of work temporarily when your idea is blocked. Enjoy the work you are doing and look for learning aids.

You can also read blogs by designers and get in touch with tutorials online. In that way you can work up your skills by doing small fabric work and  gradually move on to stronger and complex designs. You can join fashion technology institutes who offer courses in pattern drafting and increase your ability and efficiency in the art of sewing.

i want to be in the fashion field in future but how do i go about achieving that?

i want to either be an editor of a fashion magazine, working backstage at fashion shows, run my own fashion blog etc. i definitely can't be a fashion designer because i can't draw or sew for nuts. i always visit fashion blogs and envy them and wonder how they start out. how can i achieve my dream? how do people get invited to fashion shows?

You should start with going to an art school with a particular strong focus in fashion. You don't have to study fashion design, but instead fashion merchandising or other fashion-related majors. I'd also suggest that you network and meet people that have similar dreams or already in the fashion industry. They can share their experiences or perhaps introduce you to people that are doing what you hope to do. Also, I'd really recommend interning for different fashion magazines, companies, designers, and stores to give you that hands-on, behind the stage experience. Good luck!
