I'm not a big fan of Brother machines myself, I'd rather go with Singer or Pfaff who are also owned by Singer, Jenome are quite good too but can be a bit more difficult to get fixed if they break.
To be honest sewing machines can be a bit of a pain unless you pay through the nose modern machines can be rather temprimental - it may be worth seeing if there is a sewing center near to you to get advice from a sewing machine repair specialist as to what machines are best and which are the most expensive to fix if they do break.
If you are looking in Argos, the Singer 7422 Computerised Sewing Machine is the best they have available, if not the Toyota SPA15 Flip Sewing Machine might be a better buy. If you can shop around try looking for a used Singer 7442 or similar model - this is a fantastic machine for it's cost so if you can get it cheap it is worth it.
I'd suggest not going via Argos though, again look at a local sewing center, or go via e-bay...I'd also suggest checking out sewing and craft sites to get some good reviews of different machines, try the forums at http://www.craftster.org for imput from other crafters or try this site for reviews http://www.sewingmachine-sales.co.uk/sewing-machine-review
