Lighthouse Decoration On A Budget

While not every lighthouse decoration is expensive, some of the really nice ceramic lighthouses can cost fifty dollars or more. In addition, if you collect lighthouses, the cost can really add up. However, you can decorate a room in your house or sprinkle lighthouse themed items throughout your home without spending a lot of money, especially if you are creative.

If you like to sew, you can whip up lighthouse themed curtains and pillows. If you don't sew well or don't like to, you can always take plain items and embellish them with iron on transfers. Fabric paint and stencils work well for some items and you may want to cover a corner table with a lighthouse themed table cloth.

One of the least expensive things you can do when you are redecorating a room is to paint. Painting a room or even just a wall to coincide with your lighthouse decoration will really help to set off your decor and won't cost a lot of money either.

If you like crafts then you may be able to make a lighthouse decoration to go with items you already have. For example, some of the really large coffee table books can be quite expensive but you can find them on sale sometimes. In addition, look in thrift stores and online for inexpensive books about lighthouses. Then if they are in good condition, you can add them to your lighthouse display. If the outside of the book doesn't look too great then you can look inside for pictures of lighthouses that you can cut out and decorate with.

Once you have your pictures assembled, you can place them in inexpensive photo frames and display them alongside your other lighthouse themed items. You can also use pictures of lighthouses to decoupage boxes, coasters, and other craft items. For those with an imagination and creative flair, there is no limit to the items you can make to go in your lighthouse collection.

When you do purchase lighthouse themed items, you can look for sales and specials in order to save money. If you like online auctions, try your luck at one or more of them to see if you can get a good deal on someone else's castoffs. Also, if you like to go to garage sales and flea markets you can sometimes find just the lighthouse decoration you are looking for. If you save enough money on the smaller items then you may feel good about splurging now and then on one of the really nice lighthouse themed items.

What is a good sewing book for beginners who want to make clothing, not home decor?

I have next to no experience sewing so i am looking for a beginner's book. But most of them are focused on making home decor which im not into. Looking to make my own clothing.

Reader's Digest Complete Book of Sewing is recommended by many fashion schools for prospective students. It covers almost everything you need to know. Tim Gunn of Parson's and Project Runway says everyone should have a copy. For a book with even more, from beginner to advanced level skills the Vogue Sewing Book has information on embellishments, tailoring, hand sewing, linings, and more. The older Vogue book from 1975 is far superior to the newer ones and easy to find in used book stores, so it's also a thrifty choice. Similar but not quite as complete is the "Vogue Butterick Step By Step guide to Sewing Techniques." And also look into sewing patterns designed for beginners. Kwik Sew brand has a line of absolute beginner patterns called "Kwik Start" and with these you learn by doing. They have simple t-shirts, skirts, tops and jackets and as you use them you learn all the basics of garment construction. The Kwik Sew website has a message board where you can ask for help if you run into problems

After you feel comfortable with these you can move on to any of the other pattern lines such as Simplicity, Burda, Vogue, McCalls and Butterick.

One reason why home dec is often taught first is because it is considered easier, it's almost all straight line sewing, there's little to no turning from wrong side out to right side out and most pressing is flat, not shaped. Of course if you don't need ten yards of curtains it's not very useful.

Finally, there are a few places on line that offer sewing help for beginners. About.com's sewing site is packed with tips, tricks, useful lessons for beginners and a forum where you can ask questions and they will be answered by one of the experts who post regularly on the board. or irregularly, like me. Simplicity pattern's website has lots of useful information for beginners and they have the "It's so Easy" line of patterns that are also good for beginners.
