my sewing machine hums but barely moves, what should i do?
I am trying to learn to sew on a singer model 328k and it was working for my mom, but when i press the foot pedal i hear the motor but the needle barely moves, what do I do?
Hi, I'm a sewing machine tech and have a couple of 328's. You will have to remove some covers which is easy. Take off the top, side and bottom. Just screws. Here is what you have to do... look and see if the belt is slipping or has too much slack. You can run it with the covers off, tilted so you can see. It will be a bit difficult to explain but you turn a eccentric screw near the motor which adjusts the belt. Another possibility and is common is the handwheel is slipping on the shaft. Loosen the small screw on the clutch (the small wheel inside the bigger handwheel). Unscrew it. Inside that is a washer that you need to put on the same way it comes off so make note. Then you need to pull off the handwheel which might not be easy because of the belt. Hopefully you figured out how to tighten and loosen it from the bottom or else you will have to force it. There might be some oil on the shaft the handwheel is on. This needs to be cleaned and dry before you put it back on. Now do everything I said in reverse.
Otherwise its worth it to take to a technician and spend 50.00 bucks on a clean, oil and adjust. The Singer 328 is collectable and is a very strong machine. Good luck.
