Can I resew an American Eagle dress?

The dress is definitely a soft material, and I don't want to ruin it with a regular sewing machine, and my mom says a tailor would ruin it too. Do tailors have sewing machines that can hem really soft material? Or is my mom right?

You probably could sew up your dress on a regular sewing machine without ruining it! And as someone who did alterations for years, I know a tailor can alter almost any fabric without ruining it. It's not the machine, it's the needle, the thread and the machine settings that allow you to sew soft and fine materials without ruining them. A fine needle and fine thread will allow you to re-sew your dress. You might also need to loosen the tension and-or lighten the pressure on the presser foot. If the fabric is a stretchy material you'll need to use a zig zag stitch, this will allow the fabric to stretch. If it is a hem that needs fixing it is easy enough for any dressmaker or tailor to do, take it to a shop and have them look at it. If they can do it, they will tell you, if they can't they will also tell you. Is the dress on the website? maybe I could look at it and tell you a bit more.
