Where can I find a tailoring/sewing class in the Grand Prairie and or Arlington TX area?
I am a total beginner and I know the basics of sewing. I can work the sewing machine pretty well and I can make even, perfect stitched if I work at a slow pace. But I want to learn tailoring from a pro and do not know where I can find one. You know, like measuring a person and making clothes that will fit their exact body measurements.Any help? I hear Johann's gives some lessons, but I'm not sure.
Tailoring classes have gotten to be rather few and far between. From the description of your sewing, it sounds like you may need a pattern fitting and general sewing class first, just to get your confidence and speed up. Where are you in your sewing skills? Can you put in a regular zipper, both lapped and centered without a struggle? Invisible zipper? Are buttonholes still a struggle? Can you sew a well made pattern without an instruction sheet? If you can sew without an instruction sheet, you're likely ready for tailoring.
In the meantime, I'd suggest you might want to talk to ASG (American Sewing Guild) members in your area to find good teachers:

Do you want to do speed tailoring, using fusible interfacings to build shape and structure in clothes? If so, I highly recommend Judy Barlup's video/DVD called Japanese Tailoring: http://uniquetechniques.com/shopbooks/shopbooks.html
If you want to try classic hand tailoring, Cabrera and Myers' pair of books is a good introduction: "Classic Tailoring Techniques: A construction guide for Mens Wear" (or ... Women's Wear) And the pattern I'd probably start you with is Cecelia Podolak's lapel-less cardigan jacket:http://www.ceceliapodolak.com/classic.html and her book, Easy Guide to Sewing Jackets, which is now out of print. You'll also want some good tutelage on pressing. I'd suggest either Podolak's Fearless Pressing video or Mary Roehr's Pressing to Perfection: http://www.maryroehr.com/pressing-to-perfection.html
Or both. You'll spend more time pressing than sewing if you're tailoring.
I'd also suggest that you might want to consider joining some of the online sewing discussion groups, like http://www.patternreview.com, the yahoo group "creativemachine" and/or some of the quiltropolis groups like justsew, The Creative Machine, or Tailorit. It's nice to have someone who can authoritatively answer a question at o' dark thirty.
