preferably in queens, manhattan and parts of brooklyn (bordering queens). I bought a brother sewing machine,model# HS2000 hoping to save money by making my kids, family clothing.

You can buy cheap thread at any dollar store, but don't. Seamstress is right. I learned from experience that cheap thread will cost you more than it will save you. It gums up your machine so you're always cleaning it, after unpicking the scrambled stitching it made with the poor quality thread. It doesn't last as well in garments. Buy the good brand names such as Gutterman, Coats, Mettler. They look expensive but aren't really. Most fabric stores have specials sooner or later on thread in the buy-one-get-one-free type of sale. Stock up then. Buy the larger spools of colours you always use. Check the flyers when they come out. Better to save money by getting reasonable quality fabric at good prices which is often easy. Look at the expensive stuff to teach yourself what it looks and feels like even if you can't afford it so you can judge the quality of sale stuff. Bargain bins, end-of-season clearances, Wal-mart, thrift stores are all good places to find deals. Fabric stores are often ahead of clothing stores in their "seasons" so you may find winter fabric on sale in early fall. If a local fabric store which carries stuff you like has memberships with discounts for members, join. You may save more than the membership price with one purchase. It's often 40 to 70% off. And I certainly envy you being in NYC and buying fabric. You'll have access to fabric bargains I can only dream about where I live.
