What is a good starter sewing machine?

I'm looking for a basic model that will be good for repairs as well as creating clothing. I currently do a lot of hand work with vintage clothing and need a machine that will help with more labor intensive repairs (loose hems, replacing zippers).

Most machines are now made in China, it seems.
Just go to Walmart and buy their cheapest sewer.
Probably costs around $140.00.
It will do everything you need it for, and for a few bucks extra you can get a one-year guarantee from Walmart.

Most machines do "basics", and they all operate same way, it's the "computerized" special stitches that make some machines more pricey, compared to others.
