Sewing sheers with sheer fabric - puckering problem?
I'm sewing sheers with "sheer" fabric that I purchased @ Joann fabrics. It's a good quality home decor sheer/lining type fabric. The problem is my vertical seams (piecing the two 54" pieces together). Every stitch/seam I'm using is puckering. I tried french seams, regular seams, you name it. I tried setting stitch length to 1 and to 3 - no difference. My horizontal hems on the bottom are turning out perfect. I'm using the correct needle and Gutterman thread. What am I doing wrong?
Wind a new bobbin very slowly... take about 3 minutes to fill a bobbin. (Fast winding tends to stretch polyester thread a bit).
Let up a bit on the presser foot pressure.
Set the stitch length on the machine relatively long -- about 6-8 stitches per inch, and loosen the top tension a bit... if 4 is normal tension, try 3. Sew relatively slowly, and consider stabilizing the seam top and bottom with tissue paper if loosening both the tension and presser foot pressure doesn't help.
Some combination of those factors will probably allow you to sew an unpuckered seam. If it doesn't, try a slight zigzag, long stitch length, narrow stitch width -- perhaps 0.5-1mm.
