Creating a New Collection

Before starting a new collection I watch carefully how do people dress. One can see especially interesting decisions in the street. You can be surprised at the amount of notion young people show. Artsy youth in particular. Overall, the so called bohemian world stands out with its notion, originality, one can feel the perception of self as well as the use of craft and fantasy around it. I feel the satisfaction that I am not the only one who creates and meditates on such ideas and that I haven't gone wrong either.

I observe people thoroughly - what suits whom and what does not. I study how people are built, are there more proportional or misshapen people, how should they be dressed. And when I notice a leaning old lady who's original and elegant, I admire her sincerely. Careful observation and concentration on the intense oncoming time of creation - that's a huge task. I call this integral absorption of ideas - comparison of the available ideas with those of my own. This is how I get closer to using fashionable details of the time in my own manner.

And here, the season changes, the clock is ticking, clients are waiting for novelties... Studio is also ready. - Here we go.

For about two weeks I do nothing but draw and then draw some more. I get the samples of fabric and then decide which material will suit which piece of the collection the best, considering its facture, fall and thickness. I only use natural staple fabric and design linen clothes mostly. I have been seeing linen blossom and hearing all the songs and tails about it ever since I was a kid... And when any of our family members would get a fester or blain, my mom would put a knot-grass with a scrap of linen on it and it would heal really quickly. This is why linen fibre has that special value for me and my creations. I like the touch of it very much when I'm working, especially when it's uncoloured and is of its very own colour - greenish grey. This colour is very elegant and unpretentious, and can be matched with any other colour...

This is when I come to the studio with all of my drawings, where my models are sewed four times a year. Usually I work along with at least five fitters. When I come, I feel welcomed. We take the first day to discuss fashion in general. What's fashionable, what's conscious and what's not in fashion. We skim through magazines, I tell them all about the interesting things I have seen during my visual studies as well as the news from shows. Later on I present my drawings, describing each of them carefully, so everything is understood rightly. And then at last, each of the fitters choose 5 or 6 models that they think they can deliver best. I always emphasize that I don't need a blind imitation and they can offer their own construction versions, and give their creative opinion that I value very much. And it really serves the purpose! The second most important process starts right after the first fitting. When the model walks around it becomes clear what's good and what's missing. I always try to keep clear of monotony both in the upper and bottom area of the piece, because I think that every part of the body speaks its own language and I try to make my creation to enhance and decorate that language. It's not a rare occasion that the original design is changed altogether. Sometimes when we use remnants of the cut design for accessory details, we get sudden creative ideas and make spontaneous decisions, even the fitters get very involved in the process. After the collection's ready all the studio staff comes to watch our show. I watch the joyful reactions and sometimes very astonished faces in the audience with a sincere pleasure.

After ten years of fashion creation with a realization practice, I can truly say that people like dressing interestingly and originally. They don't like synthetics. For most of them it's not the matter of status. Everybody wants to look elegant. Classic style along with fantasy always stands up and never falls out of fashion. As I have been in love with nature since childhood and have always admired spiritual people, I understood that my creations will be dedicated for them. In my opinion, it's very important to define your audience. I also understood that every person can be their own best stylist and educator of taste. The important thing is not to pass by anything beautiful, but to notice the unattractive. To understand that something that suites other person will not necessarily suit you. Do not imitate, stay true to yourself.

When the instructions are confusing and keep jumping back and forth between views, I start at the beginning and make my own notes.
