confused with this number on sewing pattern?

I am learning how to sew clothing. I have started on an apron. I am
using a pattern. So far, so good. My confusion lies with the shoulder
straps. My pattern has two options - 6 or 8. I'm not sure what this
means. I am using a size 14 for my pattern. But there are all these
circles on the straps indicating either a 6 or 8. I have been marking
the circles with my little white pen on all the other pieces of the
apron, but now this strap piece is really confusing me. Is it perhaps
the measurement of my shoulder? I'm really lost. I'm hoping there are
some sewing experts out there who might have a clue as to what I'm
saying because surely it sounds confsuing.

I'm almost done cutting my fabric, and really wanted to get to sewing
today.

Several suggestions:

1) give us the pattern number and/or a photo of the pattern, and the pattern pieces in question. Offhand, my suggestions are that these are markings for strap lengths or they are size markers for size 6 or size 8 that is also included in the envelope, but without seeing the piece I can't tell you. I'm going to guess these are actually marks for where to place a button on a shoulder strap, but that's just a wild guess without knowing at least a little more about the pattern.

2) Pin together the actual pattern paper for the pieces that are bothering you. The purpose of the markings may become clear.

3) If it's a Big 4 (Simplicity/McCalls/Butterick/Vogue) or Kwiksew pattern, check the patternmaker's website for a "contact us" email address or phone number. On the other end of the line will be someone who can tell you what you're looking at. Most or all of these help numbers will only be business week/business hours numbers, not extended customer service hours. Other pattern lines may have similar services, but those makers I know do.

4) Check the patternreviews at http://www.patternreview.com With luck, someone may have made this before and can tell you about the mysterious markings. Warning, though, many of us who have sewn for years toss the instruction sheet and maybe even some of the pattern pieces at the circular file and do things our own way.

4) If you want to sew today, do what you can that does not involve those pattern pieces. For instance, if there's a ruffle, hemming and gathering a ruffle might have taken me all day when I was a beginner. Do what you can till you can consult and get the problem figured out.
