Is it necessary to interface a bag?
I sew but taught myself and am constantly finding out I don't really know much about it. I've steered clear of interfacing in bags but I see a lot of tutorials that say to add interfacing- is it necessary? I do sell things I sew- should I interface bags I put up in my shop?
Hello, I can help you with this question.
Yes and no. It really depends on a few things. First the fabric. If you are using a heavy weight fabric it is not neccesary to give the bag interfacing. It already has it from the weight of the fabric. If you should decide to use it in a heavy weight it may have to much bulk for you to sew.
It also depends on how you want the bag to perform. If you are looking for a casual bag made from cotton or a medium weight fabric, I would use a light weight interfacing, such as for hobo bags, casual totes and such. If you are looking for a more structured bag like an evening bag or a bag that has a bottom on it to stand up on it's own I would use a heavy weight inetrfacing or even a peltex. It really depends on you, the pattern and how you want the bag to perform.
If you are using a light weight or a cotton etc... I would highly recomend using some sort of a interfacing, it may be to sloppy.
If you really want to add a lot more structure to a bag, line the liner with interfacing as well as the bag. Now you will really have a bag that wil stand up on it's own. :0)
