Does anyone know how to set the timing and tension on a Brother sewing machine?

Does anyone know how to do this? The shop wants 125 to 300 hundred dollars to fix it!!!! I only paid 300 for my machine two years ago... seems silly to pay that much to fix it, I may as well buy a new one! It's a brother 270d I appreciate any help!

Hi, first of all you have to understand the principles of how the sewing machine works. Like when the needle goes through the fabric a loop forms underneath and the hook comes around that goes through the loop when the needle is on the upstroke. If your machine is out of time then this is off. You have to have the covers off to see where the hook and needle are meeting on the upstroke. The hook point should be meeting the needle just slightly above the eye. You can see this by removing the needleplate (the plate the needle passes through). In order to make this right the gears below for the hook must be separated then the hook point set just above the eye of the needle when its coming up and the gears put back together.
Basically the cost of timing this embroidery machine is do to the fact that once you have to do this you have to strip the machine down and check everything. The needle height, feeddog timing,setting the tensions. This is time consuming and not many people have the knowledge of doing it. So they can charge alot. I would guess that if your tensions are messed up your machine does not need timing.
Certain questions have to be asked. Is it threaded right? Did something bad happen? Is the needle hitting the hook and won't pass all the way down?
This is an electronic machine and bad things can happen when unplugging circuitboards etc. Probably there is a service program tests have to be run through.
$125 is a proper charge though a bit high.. Much more than that would be because of a repair or parts replacement. Much more than that and yes, consider a different machine but no more of the cheap ones.
