- Having a parent, brother, sister, or child with a history of colorectal cancer or polyps.
Rectal Cancer Surgery: Tumor Removal
A doctor may remove the cancer using one of the following types of surgery:
- Local excision
- Resection
- Resection and colostomy.
Local Excision Surgery
If the rectal cancer is found at a very early stage, the doctor may remove it without cutting into the abdomen. If the cancer is found in a polyp (a growth that protrudes from the rectal mucous membrane), the operation is called a polypectomy.
Resection Surgery
If the cancer is larger, the doctor will perform a resection of the rectum removing the cancer and a small amount of healthy tissue around it. The doctor will then perform an anastomosis sewing the healthy parts of the rectum together, sewing the remaining rectum to the colon, or sewing the colon to the anus. The lymph nodes near the rectum will also be removed and examined under a microscope to see if they contain cancer.
Resection and Colostomy Surgery
If the doctor is not able to sew the rectum back together, a stoma (an opening) is made on the outside of the body for waste to pass through. This procedure is called a colostomy. A bag is placed around the stoma to collect the waste. Sometimes the colostomy is needed only until the rectum has healed, and then it can be reversed. If the doctor needs to remove the entire rectum, however, the colostomy may be permanent.
Recovering From Rectal Cancer Surgery
Patients may feel weak or tired after rectal cancer surgery, and the recovery time after rectal cancer surgery varies for each patient. The side effects of surgery will depend on the extent of the rectal cancer, the person's general health, and other factors. Most patients have pain, which may be controlled with medicine, for the first few days after surgery. Patients should discuss pain relief with the doctor or nurse.
Side Effects
The side effects of rectal cancer treatment depend on the type of rectal cancer treatment used and may be different for each person. Most often rectal cancer side effects are temporary. Dress Alterations? help please?
Okay so we have our sixth form christmas 'ball' coming up and i have found the dress i want to wear and actually fallen in love with it! Problem is they have sold out of my size, and the size below/above. I'm usually a 10/12 (UK size) but the only size they have left on the site is a 16 smallest. so i'm wondering could i order the 16 and kinda alter it? would this be difficult, i have access to a sewing machine as i'm a textiles student or could take it to an alterations place?
