If a baby can live with pain, can we learn to live with pain without complaining?

I know I am complaining about my pain here (smile), but my great grandaughter has severe atopic dermatitis. She has such a rash that the area behind her knees is purple, her sweet little hands swell, and she gets rash so severe that it weeps, despite the medication that has been prescribed for her. I can see the pain in her eyes...but she doesn't always make a deal of it, other than wanting to scratch all the time...so I have made special mitts sewn to the sleeves of her shirts and went and bought a bunch of 100% cotton to make her clothes, as cotton is breathable. I know if I had a rash like that, it would be hard not to complain. We giggle and laugh and have such a good time together.. A little puppet book just had her cracking up...she is 14 months old. When I see the pain she is in, I feel like such a terd for groaning sometimes with the ulcerations in my tummy and esophagus. A little baby, teaches me, that we can live with pain.

You are having to deal with something that is extraordinary; you realize your great granddaugther doesn't know she is in pain. The pain of knowing what someone is missing is heart breaking.

When I was in high school I worked the summers at hospital physical therapy departments. This was mind opening for a high school student, now I really appreciate what I learned about life. You can't feel sorry for people that have never known anything different. They don't realize what they are missing and you know what they are capable of doing so you have to expect them to achieve it.

My most memorable duties were: Teaching an 8 year old to crawl, teaching an older gentleman to open his hand and gradually pulling bandages off of a 6 year old burn victim.

The 8 year old did not know what she had missed. My job was to teach her to crawl. She was proud when she could crawl.

The older gentleman was very frustrated/embarassed but so very appreciative of the help. It is very hard to lose something that was an accepted part of life.

The burn victim didn't understand this painful nightmare. This could have been fatal, but a little girl did have full life, That was a miracle.

After all these examples, my message is: you feel the pain, not your great grand daughter. It hurts you, but she will have the wonderful feelings of the good feelings with her great grand mother and the mittens.
