How do I properly fix a hem on a pleated skirt?
I don't even know HOW to turn on the sewing machine- I'm very new to sewing. I can knit and embroider and can sew by hand. How do I use the machine to fix the hem? I have it all measured and pinned up- the original seam is still in place. Do I need to pull it out before sewing the skirt to its new length?
Yes, you will have to remove the original hem or it will be much too heavy to hang properly.
Cut it about one and a quarter inches above where you want the new hem to come. Turn under the quarter inch using the iron and pin in place. Turn the hem to the one inch mark, press and pin.
The best hems are hand stitched, not machine stitched. Useing the same techniques as for blanket stitch in embroidery but with tiny base rather than the quarter inch base stitch, sew in your hem.
Press the pleats back to where they belong using vinegar on press cloth to make new pleating in the hem.
