6 Tips to Creating Your Own Curtains
Ready to dress up your windows but don't want to spend a lot of money on curtains? Well, there are actually some very simple tips that you can use to your advantage to create great looking curtains at home so that you don't have to spend a lot and you don't have to have a designer's touch either. You just need some simple tips that you can follow, and here are six to help get you on the road to beautiful windows.
Tip #1: Check out your local dollar store. You will find that there are so many great little stores all over that offer everything they sell for simply a buck. This might not mean that you'll get designer curtains for a dollar, but you can sure get some great items to dress up your curtains with, like ivy strands, bows, and flowers. It doesn't matter what type of look you're going for, you can find some great, cheap items to dress your windows up.
Tip #2: You should look at sheer material. Just about every craft or fabric shop out there offers some beautiful material in sheer colors. This means that you won't get as much sun light blockage, but that you will get a set of beautiful curtains for any room in your house.
Tip #3: There are always great clearance rack materials. Of course, if you don't want to go with the sheer material, check the clearance rack as there can be some beautiful material here that you might not otherwise be able to afford. This is a great way to find thicker material that you don't want to pay full price for as well for your curtains.
Tip #4: Sewing machines are overrated. You don't have to have one if you just simply have a needle and thread. And, you don't even have to be a master seamstress to make curtains either. Simply thread the needed back and forth to sew the hems and you can easily create beautiful curtains for your home without much effort at all.
Tip #5: Hems have to be strong. This means that you do need to either use thick thread or go over the hems a couple of times - usually both. This way, if the curtains sag over time, you don't have to worry about the seam splitting or popping. So, you can easily create a heavier seam to begin with and you won't have to worry about anything.
Tip #6: Dress them up. Once you have your curtains up and ready to rock, use the items that you purchased to dress them up. Take flowers and spread them along the tops, wrap ivy around the curtains, or simply attach some bows to the tops of them. It won't take much to create a unique look that you'll be proud of.
There you go, six simple tips to creating beautiful curtains at home without a high budget and without a sewing machine. You can easily do this for every room in your house if you want to, and create the perfect look, no matter what look you're going for.

Sewing Curtains?
I'd like to sew some basic curtains for my appartment. I have five tall windows (33 1/4 x 78). I do not have a sewing machine, or the money to buy one, but I do know how to sew by hand. How do I go about making these curtains? Are there any good websites that can give step-by-step instructions for a beginner? Thanks
You can get a really cheap machine at Wal Mart. I hate to sew by hand, but I can tell you how to go about most of it.
1st--mark where you would want your curtain rod mounted
2nd--where do you want the hem to be
3rd--allow so much fabric for the rod pocket that you think you would want, I suggest 2 or more inches, plus some to turn under for clean edge on back side, about 1/2 inches= 21/2 -3 inches for top rod pocket.
4th--get length you want and add how much hem, plus 1/2 in. to turn under and press for clean edge on back side. I recommend about 3-4 inches for hem and 1/2 in. for turn under.
5th-- get the width of how wide you want them to be plus the turn under for clean edge, about 1 in.
Then you have the length of material you need and multiply by 2 if you want a pair. Multiply by 4, because you will have four edges for a pair of curtains.
Turn under the 1/2 in on back side and press, then turn under the rod pocket and [ress----the same for the others.
Then just go to the fabric store and tell them these measurements and they can figure out how much you need.
I hope you get what I tried to say and explain---good luck.
