can i sew thick upholstery fabric on an average singer machine?
i know the machine can be use for jeans.
do you know what needle i should use?
this will be my first time making curtains and a cover for my sofa, any tips will be appreciate.
Depends on the fabric. Coated upholstery fabric is pretty tough for a home machine. Heavy threads like #69 upholstery nylon will tear up the tensions in not a whole lot of time.
Needle should be a sharp for wovens, ballpoint for knits. You'll have to look at the manual to see what sizes are acceptable, but 16/100 is the largest for many home machines. (See a "suite" of needle sizes here to see why larger needles than expected can damage the machine:

When sewing large pieces of fabric, rig up some way to support the bulk of the fabric. Letting it drip off the edge of the table makes for very inaccurate stitching, and often, broken needles.
