I am sewing for the firts time in 27 years. HELP....do i pin and cut the pattern on the material?
My husband is deploying next month. I wanted to make him some boxers he is a med. How do I know what to do with a pattern that measures from xs to xl? Where do I pin and what do I cut?
Check the pattern's measurements against some current boxers... pattern sizes and ready-to-wear sizes are NOT the same. I prefer to measure both a garment that fits and the pattern (rather than relying on the measurements on the back of the pattern).
Once you've decide the pattern size, either trace off a copy pattern or cut it along the correct size line. Pin the pattern to the fabric (being sure to match the grainlines, otherwise the boxers will twist as he walks), and cut.
On the rare occasions I use a commercial pattern, one of the first things I do is to lay a ruler along the grainline marking
on the pattern and extend the grainline the full length of the
pattern piece. This makes it very easy to measure over from the
selvage of the fabric to the grainline marking at top and bottom to be sure the pattern is on grain before cutting.
