How do I get a serger or overlock sewing machine to start sewing correctly?
I have a babylock ea-605 with no owners manual. I found some instructions to thread it online and I'm pretty sure that it is threaded correctly. I am using the 4-thread configuration. I was forwarding it by hand and got the threads to start locking and it was looking good, but then I started it with the foot pedal and everything fell apart and neither the chain nor the overlock stich worked anymore. Now I can't remember how I got it start locking in the first place. Does anyone know about this? Am I supposed to be pulling the thread tails in the beginning, or have no tension at all?
If it's actually forming a chain to begin with, it should also chain when the fabric is in the machine -- so I'm wondering if you actually had a chain, or if the thread broke.
The exact crossings of the thread paths is really critical to overlocking -- particularly which looper crosses. Typically, the order of threading is critical. and the typical threading order is upper looper, lower looper, right needle, left needle. When you're done, the lower looper thread is over the upper looper thread (yes, it sounds loopy!).
Other possible causes for this behavior are a bad needle and a timing problem.
Do get a manual for your machine, and in the meantime, head for the public library to pick up a basic serger book -- the two I'd suggest are Chris James' The Complete Serger Handbook and a multi-authored one called Ultimate Serger Answer Guide.
