What size curtain (measurements), how much fabric?
i have the length pretty well determined (enough for the hems and rod pocket.
i am not sure how "wide" to make the fabric so the curtains will look the best. the width of the window is 48" inches, how many inches across should i make the curtain so it hangs nicely (ie, i don't want it to look completely "flat" i want it to look nicely with the appearance of "shirring". the material has a cute repeating design, but the design is small enough that i don't need the curtain to look flat and strethed, i would like that "gathered" look. i will not be using tie backs at all, it's just a basic curtain for the kitchen.
sorry this is such a long question, but i am learning how to sew with my new machine, and this project seems easy except for judging the measurement.
thanks in advance!
It partly depends on how much body your fabric has. It's also called the "hand" of the fabric. If it's commercial upholstery/drapery weight, I'd go 1.5 times the width of the window. If it's fabric you purchased off the bolt, I'd fully double the measurement.
Are you planning to line the curtain? I highly recommend it! Your curtains will look more professional & hang better, too. Take your fabric to the store & ask for help with lining fabric & techniques.
One question for you - didn't your machine come with some free classes? I'd make a few friends @ the fabric store! They are very helpful - I've been sewing since 1965 (I was a Girl Scout) & am still learning and asking questions!
Good luck!!!
