Need some ideas for a homemade gift. Involves sewing.?
I bought some NFL, flannel (on one side) fabric for a Christmas present for my husband. Now I don't know what to make with it. I was leaning toward a quilt, with added fabric..... or maybe even pajama pants. Anybody have any suggestion? Thanks!!!
It's 3 yards, but I can always get more.
A quilt is a nice idea - flannel would make an easy, large block quilt. You don't want to do intricate piecing with it because it has a looser weave and is more prone to stretching. For a really simple quilt, just back the flannel with some polar fleece and tack it with your sewing machine at 3" - 6" intervals. This is way easier than quilting, but will still look nice and hold the fabric together. If you want to do something a little more detailed, cut your fabric into pieces that are 12" square, 6" square, and 12" x 6". Get some chenille in a complementary color and cut into the same size blocks. If you want, get some other flannel in solid colors and cut into the same sizes. Lay it out on your floor, alternating fabrics, until you have a mixture that you like. Sew it all together, then back it with polar fleece and tack it as before. I made a flannel/chenille/polar fleece quilt like this, and it's wonderfully warm and cozy, but still very easy to do.
One very important thing - be sure to wash your fabric before cutting and sewing. Flannel shrinks quite a bit - as much as 25%. If you make pajama bottoms, they may turn into boxers.
