How to sew a skirt to a tank top?
I really like this dress but can't afford it so I thought I'd make something like it myself:

I've done some really basic sewing with pillows and stuffed animals before but never clothing so I want to make it easy. I was thinking of sewing a circle skirt or other easy skirt (what would you recommend?) and then sewing it onto a tank top. How would I do this with a sewing machine without sewing through both sides of the tank top? Am I going to have to use a zipper on the dress or can I use an elastic and make like a waistband between the tank and skirt (both materials will be knit fabric)? How would you go about making this dress?
I like your idea! Here's a couple links to instructions and a video to get you started. Cut the fabric wide enough to fit over your hips plus a few more inches for ease. Instead of a drawstring, gather the top of the skirt using a couple rows of long stitching, and pull the bobbin threads to make it pucker until it's a little larger than your hips. Pin the skirt to a band of stretchy cloth if you want to make the waistband, and sew it together. Then pin and sew the waistband to the tank top, stretching the tank as you sew. Probably won't need a zipper if it fits over your head and shoulders. The dress you show uses a couple of scarves, which is a cool idea. You might turn them on the diagonal and use the corners as part of the design.
