Sewing measurements vs. commercial sizes?
So in sewing, I've noticed that the size measurements on the back of the packages don't seem to match up with commercial dress sizes. Using myself as an example, I have a 31 in. waist and usually wear size 12 dress, but most sewing patterns list a 32 in. waist (rounding up) as a size 18. Am I misunderstanding the size charts they use, or am I not measuring myself properly, or am I just missing something? Can someone explain this to me?
Nope. Sizing in patterns is fairly consistent among brands. Sizing in ready to wear is all over the board... and if you go try bridal gowns on, you'll find that bridal dress sizing is more like pattern size (for various historical reasons.) Go by the measurement, not the size designator. Typically, you need a pattern size a couple of sizes up from Walmart sizing... but if you wear "better" clothes, you may need a pattern size 6 sizes up from the pattern size.
Go by measurement. Also be sure to read the ease descriptions on pattern envelopes. If a RTW garment has been cut with a lot of ease, and you want a slimmer fit, you can always try on a smaller size. If a pattern has much more ease than you're expecting, then you wind up with something you've made that fits like a tent.

Often, when deciding what size pattern to cut, it's helpful to measure some garments you like and then compare that to the actual measurement of the pattern in that area.
