De-Stress Through Creativity!

I never thought I was creative as a child. Iâ€™d tried crafts and they never turned out. I tried sewing and my teacher told me sewing wasnâ€™t my thing â€“ she encouraged me to try shop class. And in art â€“ I was a complete disaster. I eventually just gave up being creative.

Over the past twenty five years, Iâ€™ve figured out creativity isnâ€™t about being able to draw a still life portrait; itâ€™s about expressing who I am. Itâ€™s about using the right side of my brain, allowing myself to try new things, even if they donâ€™t always turn out as I planned.

Weâ€™re all creative in our own ways. Each one of us has a unique set of gifts with which to express creative ourselves. We can also develop new creative outlets outside of our talent areas. If you know what your creative talents are use and develop them. Or if youâ€™re like me and donâ€™t know where your creativity lies, take time now to discover what you enjoy.

A few months ago I met a woman named Diane, who inspired me with her story. Sheâ€™d never painted in her entire life before the age of 45. Infact, she said sheâ€™d never really done any type of art. Yet after her husband passed away a few years ago, she began painting. She found painting helped her relieve stress and deal with the tough times. Through painting she was reenergized and found a new passion. After five years, her studio is full of amazing paintings she sells for profit.

Diane is an example of how creativity can work to reduce stress in our lives. She used painting as a way to work through tough emotions and hard days. Through painting she found peace and her passion for life was renewed. She now speaks to women about finding their passion through creativity.

Diane has made me think about my writing in a new way. Iâ€™ve always loved to write. I express myself better in words. Iâ€™ve kept a journal my whole life and I write there as often as I can. Itâ€™s my way to pray, grow and release negativity. For me writing is a release from all the stress of life.

Even though Iâ€™ve always been a writer, I never thought of it as creative outlet. It was just part of my life. My writing wasnâ€™t a gift or talent â€“ itâ€™s just what I did.

Thatâ€™s often how our creative talents are. Theyâ€™re just there, theyâ€™ve always been a part of us and yet we donâ€™t give them enough room to grow. We often enjoyed many creative outlets as children and then forget about them as adults.

As I began to grow with my writing, I found I had creativity in others areas as well. I love to plant flowers, take pictures, scrapbook, make cards and cook. All of these things help me get in touch with my creative side. As I was sitting working on my scrapbooks the other night, I felt relaxed. I felt all the stress releasing from my body.

I found this quote online and it sums up exactly how I feel about creativity. Daisaku Ikeda says, â€œYou must not for one instant give up the effort to build new lives for yourselves. Creativity means to push open the heavy, groaning doorway to life. This is not an easy struggle. Indeed, it may be the most difficult task in the world, for opening the door to your own life is, in the end, more difficult than opening the doors to the mysteries of the universe.â€ Â Creativity will open the doors to new life. It rejuvenates us, enables us to deal with stress and be the best we can be for ourselves, our families and the world.

Take time today to think about ways to be more creative. What did you like to do as a child?Â What have you always wanted to try but were too afraid to?Â Do you love to dance? Take dance lessons. Do you love to swim? Go to the lake. Do you love to doodle? Try cartooning. Do you love to serve? Try gourmet-cooking lessons. Do you love to write? Then sit down with a notebook.Â

Once we figure out what creative outlets feed our soul we can then find ways to add creativity to our life. If you are an accountant, a mother of five, and a wife, you have very little time or energy to add more things into your life. Yet you canâ€™t afford not to. Iâ€™ve seen too many women give up who they were for a man, or for their kids, or for their career and then one day they wake up and they are miserable.

I am in no way suggesting that you throw away your marriage or sacrifice your children or your career. What Iâ€™m suggesting is that you find ways to express yourself creatively and then schedule a time for yourself to enjoy whatever it is you love.Â It could be once a month, once a week, or you could use your vacation time once a year to explore new opportunities.Â We can start small but we must begin.

7 Ways to Increase Creativity:

Decide. Decide to make being creative a priority. Making a decision and giving ourselves permission to be creative and take time for it is the first step.
Make time. Schedule time for yourself each week to be creative. Start with one hour per week and then increase it as creativity becomes a regular part of your life.
Take Risks. Try new things. Take a class. Go on a new adventure. Be open to new ways to explore your creativity.
Let go! Let go of what others think or how they look at you. Creative people have fun lives and are not afraid to get messy and take risks.
Look for opportunities. Look for ways to be spontaneous and for new opportunities. Make a sand castle, try a new recipe or build something all by yourself.
Ask for help. Ask your girlfriends to help you be more creative. Plan time to be creative with others. Do crafts, scrapbook or make cards.
Be a child again. Ask yourself if you were a kid all over again â€“ what would you create? Then go out and do it.
Clear the clutter. We need to remove the clutter from our lives in order to be more creative. Creativity needs room to grow and develop.

Are hair extensions a real pain to deal with on a daily basis?

I had cheap extensions sewn in for my wedding/honeymoon and they were OK but that's when I was on vacation. For someone who is not dedicated to spending a lot of time primping on a daily basis (me) are they worth all that money for the good ones? I was quoted a bit under $1000 which is bukoo bucks but worth it considering my love for long hair. I guess my major concern is whether or not I will be able to throw it up in a pony tail or put on a hat on the days that I don't want to do my hair. Will it still look real and beautiful or will it show at the roots and be a ratty mess? Thanks for your input!

I have the "Great Lengths" ones and they're very, very good quality, although they were expensive ($1200) they'll last a long time (this is my second set) and they don't show - I pull my hair back all the time & just wore an updo to a party, and it brushes out beautifully. Some days I curl it & others I don't, but it always looks great - strangers stop me on the street to comment on my hair and it doesn't look fake at all. It's a bit more care than your own hair, but still not that much. Go for Great Lengths - they're the best
